ZACHARY
Retrun to 22q StoriesYou are here
Zachary was a full-term baby. He had low growth issues as an infant. During his circumcision, it was discovered he had Hypospadias and that was repaired at age 7 months. He began having upper respiratory infections and breathing problems a few weeks after birth. At the age of 6 months, he began having ear infections. Zach has had three sets of tubes in his ears and his adenoids removed twice. His speech wasn’t developing the way I felt it should and I was put off by several doctors saying it was just developmental. He contiuned to have ear infections and was tested from allergies to Cystic Fibrosis. Zach has a mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears as well as perforations in both ears from the tubes. He wears BTE hearing aids as well as glasses. He has a severe speech delay and that is what triggered his ENT to do a FISH test for 22q. He was diagnosed just before his 5th birthday. Zach has VPI which causes his speech problems. He has been in speech for one year. He will be going to pre-K for the 2011/2012 school year and he is very excited. Zach LOVES sports. He will be playing soccer in the fall and t-ball in the spring. Having him diagnosed at a later age after many sleepless nights, lots of research and dead ends I first felt relieved. After reading about all the symptoms 22q can cause, I am feeling overwhelmed but Zach is a tough guy and he has taken his past six surgeries in stride. He will have at least 3 more surgeries in the future. I believe that God doesn’t allow anything to happen to you that you can’t handle and I am thankful for my two healthly boys and my very special Zach!!
